چکیده

A most interesting fact for scientific investigations is that 5% of women are afflicted with recurrent genital candidosis (RGC) characterized by three or more genital, fungal infection episodes per a year. The data analysis is also interesting because it reveals that the most significant risk factors such as pregnancy, diabetes mellitus, long term use of antibiotics and citostatics, hormonal therapy and idiopathic or acquired immunodeficient conditions have not been verified. There are many different hypotheses about RGC pathogenesis, but two of them have set the course for further research. The first maintains that antimycotic therapy leads to eradication of Candida fungi from vaginal mucosa and that the recurrent episodes of genital candidosis are caused by re-infection. The second hypothesis has an absolutely opposite starting ground. According to this theory, the frequent RGC episodes have been caused by a failure to eradicate Candida sp. from female genital tract. According to this theory, RGC is not caused by re-infection, but by relapse.

Recurrent genital candidosis in women and the effect of intermittent prophylactic treatment.

A study of clotrimazole for the treatment of recurrent genital candidosis unexpectedly showed that symptoms and infection can be dissociated. The aim of the study was to see if intermittent antifungal treatment would reduce symptoms in women constantly distressed by recurrent genital candidosis. Forty women seriously affected by the condition were initially given oral and local antifungal treat...

Recurrent genital candidosis and iron metabolism.

It was thought possible that recurrent genital candidosis, like chronic mucocutaneous candidiasis, might be related to abnormalities in iron metabolism. Haemoglobin, serum iron, and serum ferritin levels of patients with recurrent genital candidosis were compared with those of patients who harboured yeasts but had no history of 'thrush', and with a control group of patients with no evidence of ...

A study of candidosis: the role of fomites.

This study investigates treatment failure and recurrences of vulvo-vaginal candidosis. It reviews the factors possibly associated with both. Patients attending a department of genitourinary medicine with recurrent candidosis (N = 186) were entered in the trial. The patients were investigated for evidence of candidosis from vagina, rectal wall and buccal mucosa and were given antifungal therapy....

Recurrent melioidosis in patients in northeast Thailand is frequently due to reinfection rather than relapse.

Human melioidosis is associated with a high rate of recurrent disease, despite adequate antimicrobial treatment. Here, we define the rate of relapse versus the rate of reinfection in 116 patients with 123 episodes of recurrent melioidosis who were treated at Sappasithiprasong Hospital in Northeast Thailand between 1986 and 2005. Pulsed-field gel electrophoresis was performed on all isolates; is...

An investigation into the pathogenesis of vulvo-vaginal candidosis.

OBJECTIVE To monitor yeasts isolated from women during and between episodes of recurrent vulvo-vaginal candidosis (VVC) to determine whether vaginal relapse or re-infection occurred. METHODS Women presenting at the genitourinary medicine clinic with signs and symptoms of VVC were recruited to the study (n = 121). A vaginal washing, high vaginal swab (HVS) and rectal swab were taken and the wo...
